Actofy Guide
How long should a visual book summary be?
There is no single right length. Match it to what you want from the summary, then check whether you finish.
Last updated
A book summary should be as short as its purpose allows: very short to decide whether a book is worth your time, longer to get its argument, and long only if you want a walkthrough. Publishers give very different figures, from a chapter of a few minutes to videos of half an hour. Actofy does not use one standard length: length varies by title, and chapters let you take one idea at a time.
Start from the purpose, not the number
People ask for a number, but a number without a purpose is not much help. A useful way to choose is to ask what you want to be able to do afterwards.
- Decide whether a book is worth reading: you want a very short pass, and you should be able to stop at any point.
- Get the shape of an argument: a medium length that covers the main ideas and one example each.
- Follow a whole book without reading it: a long walkthrough is reasonable, if you have the time and it holds your attention.
- Revisit one idea: you want short units you can jump to, which is what chapters are for.
What publishers say about length
These are the figures publishers give on their US App Store listings, as of September 28, 2026. They are the publishers' own descriptions, not measurements, and they can change.
| App | What its listing says |
|---|---|
| Blinkist | Key ideas from a book in about 15 minutes, as audio and text. |
| Headway | The main ideas from a nonfiction bestseller in less than 15 minutes. |
| StoryShots | Key insights in about 15 minutes; its website describes 5-, 15- and 45-minute versions. |
| Braintoon | 10-minute animated summaries. |
| BookWatch | 30-minute videos; its website FAQ says usually 20 to 60 minutes. |
| Imprint | A chapter in two minutes or less. |
| Deepstash | A few minutes a day of short idea cards. |
| Actofy | Length varies by title. Chapters let you return to one idea. |

Why a fixed number can mislead
Books differ. A short, focused book and a sprawling history do not compress the same way, and a fixed length either cuts the long one too hard or pads the short one. A summary that varies with the book is often more honest than one that always fits a slot.
A summary is also not only its length. What it leaves out matters more than how long it runs: an argument, an example, a caveat. Read the attribution and the limits, and read the book when an idea matters.
How Actofy handles length
Actofy does not promise a standard length. It is organized by title and chapter, so you can take one idea at a time and come back to it, and formats vary by title: some are illustrated pages you flip through, some are video chapters. An internet connection is required for video playback.
